LAN Link Needs Help, Too!

The LAN Link Network is striving to help keep LANs going in Australia, by informing the public about the LANs that are running, and offering advice and advertising to LAN administrators. While we are offering support, there are so many things to do on our agenda, that we need help ourselves to get it all done.

So, we are looking for people who are interested in volunteering their time and effort, to help us with tasks on our agenda. Although volunteers are not paid to do these tasks, they can choose to do what they want, as much as they want, whenever they like.

What tasks need to be done? The tasks include (but are not limited to):

• Advertise the existence of The LAN Link Network on the Internet
• Post on and/or moderate the LAN Link forum (in part or as a whole)
• Assist LANs in advertising their events on the Internet
• Update LAN events on the LAN Link website and calendar
• Discuss ideas on how LANs could be improved in general
• Provide LAN admin with helpful information on how LANs can be run (including start-ups)
• Escort prizes from an LAN Link prize pool to various LANs in your home state
• Conduct reviews of LAN groups and their events

What do you get for being a volunteer? For starters, you will get your name put on our website, as well as the position(s) you are assigned, based on the tasks you choose to do. Secondly, it looks good on your resumè that you have decided to help a not-for-profit organisation, and could help you get a paid job. Further benefits are based on what you choose to do, and how long for. If you want to help moderate our forum site, for example, you will be given a special forum account to do this with, along with your name highlighted in green, so that it can be instantly recognised by other people. Want to do conduct reviews on LAN parties in your area? There's a good chance you could get a free entry to your local LAN events, to help you out with that!

After one whole year of being a volunteer (and no hiccups along the way), you will be eligible to become a LAN Link Administrator.
LAN Link Administrators are allowed to vote in the decisions that steer The LAN Link Network's activities, as an organisation.

What should I do to become a volunteer? If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, let us know by either posting on the forums (preferably in this topic), or commenting on our Facebook page.

Include the tasks you would be interested in doing in your message. You will then be sent a list of questions to answer soon after. This is a necessary part of our screening process, to identify people who will genuinely assist us. People who have had a lot of experience with running public LAN parties in the past, will not need to do the questionnaire.

Once we are happy that you are capable and willing enough to volunteer, you will be provided with additional information about what you need to do, and any rules that go along with the tasks assigned to you.

I have advertised these forums on the OCAU Forums, both in a thread about various states LAN Parties and in my TAG line.

I would be willing to make a thread for each states LAN Parties and keep it as up to date as I can.

Since I have just started a full-time job as a PC Field Service Engineer my hours available would be limited.

I have been going to LAN Parties for about 13 years now.

The first organised one I went to was Valhalla in Adelaide with about 450-500 people.
This shut down a few years ago due to lack of committee members and numbers had declined due to ADSL taking off.
That first reason appears to be the main reason most parties close.

The biggest in SA is currently Streetgeek which holds events every two months with up to 100 or so people over 26 hours.

We have recently added a 'Volunteer's Panel' to our website. This should give the public a better insight into the kinds of roles that could be done, including a priority rating for each role, and a link to click on for more information, such as starting requirements, tasks involved, rules and guidelines.

This panel can normally be accessed from the new 'Volunteer' link at the bottom right-hand corner of our website.

While not quite complete yet, we hope to have the public version of the panel finished in the coming weeks. If you are interested, please check back on it from time to time, as it may be updated to include additional roles.
